Matthew Lillard Returns as Stu in Scream 7
Matthew Lillard, renowned for his role as the villainous Stuart "Stu" Macher in the original 1996 Scream film, is set to return for Scream 7, as reported by Deadline. Fans are buzzing with curiosity about how Lillard's character can feature in the new installment, considering the fate of Stu in the first movie. Will he reprise his iconic role, or will he portray a new character? The mystery deepens as Lillard himself hinted at his involvement through an intriguing Instagram post:
The anticipation for Scream 7 grows as Lillard joins a cast that includes returning stars Neve Campbell, reprising her role as Sidney Prescott, and Courteney Cox. They'll be accompanied by Scott Foley, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown.
The journey to Scream 7 has been turbulent, with significant changes in the cast and crew. In November 2023, star Melissa Barrera was dismissed from the film following her social media comments on the Gaza conflict. Shortly after, Jenna Ortega announced her departure, leaving the Carpenter sisters, central to the franchise since Scream (2022), out of the picture.
The directorial seat also saw shifts. Christopher Landon, who was set to helm Scream 7, left the project in December 2023, describing the experience as a "dream job that turned into a nightmare." Stepping in is Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter behind the original Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4. Meanwhile, the Scream and Scream 6 directors, Radio Silence, opted not to return for Scream 7 but will serve as executive producers. Guy Busick, co-writer of the last two films, is back to pen the screenplay.
Scream 7 is slated to thrill audiences in cinemas starting February 27, 2026.
