Marvel Star Simu Liu Says He's Working to Get Sleeping Dogs a Film Adaptation
Simu Liu, the star of Marvel's Shang-Chi, is spearheading efforts to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu responded to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he's actively working with rights holders to bring the video game to the big screen.
The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, was seemingly abandoned a year later. Recently, Yen confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, ultimately thwarted by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
Liu's intervention reignites hope for the Hong Kong-based action franchise. However, the success of his endeavor in securing the rights or moving the project forward remains uncertain.
The original Sleeping Dogs game, released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows Detective Wei Shen as he undertakes an undercover operation within a formidable Hong Kong Triad. Critically acclaimed (earning an 8/10 from IGN), the game, despite its success, never received a sequel. Liu's involvement could potentially change that, bringing this popular game to the silver screen.
