M3GAN Re-Release: Enhanced with 'Second Screen' and Live Chatbot
As Blumhouse Productions gears up to celebrate its 15th anniversary, they're bringing back the 2022 horror hit, M3GAN, to theaters in a special limited engagement. This move not only celebrates the milestone but also serves as a thrilling precursor to the upcoming sequel, M3GAN 2.0. However, this return to the big screen is stirring up some controversy due to the inclusion of new, interactive features that encourage smartphone use during the film.
In a bold move as part of their Halfway to Halloween initiative, Shudder is set to screen M3GAN, along with Ma and Annabelle, in one-night-only events. These screenings will incorporate Meta's innovative "Movie Mate" technology, allowing audience members to engage directly with M3GAN through a chatbot. Additionally, the second screen feature will provide viewers with real-time access to exclusive content, enhancing the movie-watching experience.
"Movie Mate is only available to moviegoers who are in a theater, and works by DM'ing the Instagram account @M3GAN to start the experience," Blumhouse clarified in a statement featured in Variety. This technology is designed to leverage Meta's capabilities, aiming to elevate the 'second screen' viewing experience and generate buzz ahead of M3GAN 2.0's release on June 27.
Fans attending these screenings can look forward to sneak peeks, exclusive recorded messages from the films' directors and talent, and surprise special appearances in select markets. While this approach is innovative, it raises concerns about further eroding the traditional theatrical experience. It's a development that's met with mixed feelings, and only time will tell how audiences will respond once they experience it firsthand. Hopefully, this trend won't extend to regular screenings in the near future.
The M3GAN screenings are scheduled for April 30 across various theaters nationwide, followed by Annabelle on May 7, and Ma on May 14. M3GAN 2.0 is set to premiere in the United States on June 27.
