It currently ranks as the 2nd top-selling game on Steam, trailing only behind Counter-Strike 2, and is the 5th most-played game, following CS2, Dota 2, Marvel Rivals, and Banana. With an initial launch of 1 million copies sold, KCD2 is on track to reach 2 million copies sold soon.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Commitment to Detail
The success of KCD2's opening weekend can be attributed to Warhorse Studios' meticulous attention to detail, enhancing player immersion and enjoyment. Building on the series' reputation for realism, KCD2 introduces new elements that transport players to a 15th-century medieval world. Features like food spoilage, the need for cleaning clothes and armor, and sword maintenance are complemented by innovative additions.
KCD2 Senior Game Designer Ondřej Bittner highlighted a new stealth mechanic to GamesRadar, explaining that as players accumulate dirt and grime, they can acquire a debuff. "If you get the debuff that, you know, your body odour, you smell. There's like a circle around you," Bittner stated. He added, "Basically, you're broadcasting, like, I'm here."
The game also introduces "handgonnes," early firearms that reflect the era's technology. Bittner shared with PC Gamer that these weapons are challenging to use, with long reload times and poor accuracy, making them a "meme weapon" but one that adds to the game's authenticity.
KCD2 PR Manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling emphasized their focus on authenticity over hyperaccuracy. "We want to have an intriguing and cool and fun and nice videogame. However, we try extremely hard to make it as authentic as possible. We double check the stuff, so that when the player plays it, or whenever someone checks it, that the things that are listed in there are at least plausible," he explained.
Post-Launch Roadmap
Warhorse Studios has outlined a comprehensive post-launch roadmap to keep players engaged throughout 2025. KCD2 will offer free updates and paid DLC content to maintain its momentum.
Free updates scheduled for Spring 2025 include the Barber feature, Hardcore mode, and Horse Racing. Paid DLCs will roll out starting in Summer with "Brushes with Death," followed by "Legacy of the Forge" in Autumn, and "Mysteria Ecclesiae" in Winter.
With its stellar opening weekend and a robust plan for future content, KCD2 is poised to continue its record-breaking trajectory.
