Jon Bernthal's Punisher to Star in Marvel Special Post-Daredevil: Born Again

Exciting news for fans of the Marvel universe: Jon Bernthal's iconic portrayal of the Punisher is set to make a thrilling comeback following the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. This return will be in the form of a Marvel special, styled similarly to the Guardians of the Galaxy specials, which promises to be a unique blend of action and emotion. Entertainment Weekly has revealed that Bernthal will not only star but also co-write this special alongside We Own This City director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, described the upcoming project as "a shotgun blast of a story, but also [with] all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story," highlighting the anticipation surrounding its release.

The announcement of the Punisher one-shot coincides with Marvel Television's ambitious plans to bring back the Defenders on Disney+. This gritty team of street-level superheroes, including Matt Murdock's Daredevil, Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones, Mike Colter's Luke Cage, and Finn Jones' Iron Fist, was last seen on Netflix before their episodes were incorporated into the MCU canon on Disney+. Brad Winderbaum shared his enthusiasm with Entertainment Weekly, stating, "It’s certainly exciting to be able to play in that sandbox... We’re dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring."

Daredevil: Born Again, set to premiere on March 4, will continue the saga that originated on Netflix. The series will see the return of beloved characters like Bernthal's Punisher and Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk (Kingpin). This time, they'll face a new threat in the form of the artistically inclined serial killer Muse, promising a narrative filled with suspense and intrigue.
