How To Unlock Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley
When you begin your journey in Stardew Valley, you have the option to adopt either a cat or a dog to accompany you on your farm. Before the 1.6 update, you were limited to just one pet per save file. Now, to unlock the ability to adopt more pets, you need to reach the maximum friendship level with your current pet.
To do this, ensure you fill your pet's water bowl daily using your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically. Additionally, pet them once a day, and you'll see a heart bubble appear above their head, indicating your interaction. You can monitor your pet's friendship level in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.
Once the friendship meter is full, you'll receive a notice from Marnie via mail about adopting additional pets available at her shop, located south of your farm. If you haven't adopted a pet within your first year, Marnie will send you the notice at the beginning of Year 2.

Upon receiving Marnie's notice, head to her shop during regular hours (9:00 am to 4:00 pm, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). Speak to Marnie at the counter and select the "Adopt Pets" option from the menu. You'll be presented with a list of 12 available Pet Licenses, which include five variations each of dogs and cats, as well as two types of turtles. How To Get Supplies for Pets in Stardew Valley
After selecting your new pets, visit Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to order Pet Bowls for each. These bowls not only provide water but also serve as a "home" for your pets, preventing your friendship meter from decreasing. Neglecting the bowls could lead to your pets running away, resulting in a loss of companionship and your investment.
You can find Pet Bowls in Robin’s "Construct Farm Buildings" menu, costing 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood (obtainable with a Copper Axe or better). Consider building these before adopting your new pets to safeguard their friendship points.
For additional pet accessories, Marnie's Ranch offers Doghouses (for outdoor use) and Cat Trees (for indoor use). These items are purely decorative and do not affect your pets' friendship meters.
With this guide, you're now equipped to bring more pets into your Stardew Valley farm life. For more tips and updates on the game, including insights on all Stardew Valley farm types and how to choose the best one, visit The Escapist.
