Microsoft has announced a delay for the highly anticipated reboot of the Fable series, pushing its release from 2025 to 2026. This news came alongside the first glimpse of new pre-alpha gameplay footage during the latest episode of the Xbox Podcast. Fable, a beloved franchise originally developed by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios, is being revived by UK's Playground Games, renowned for their critically acclaimed Forza Horizon series.

Craig Duncan, the former head of Rare who transitioned to head of Xbox Game Studios last fall, used the podcast to reassure fans about the delay. "Really excited about progress," Duncan stated, emphasizing his confidence in Playground Games. He highlighted their track record with Forza Horizon, which has consistently received high praise and awards, including a 92 Metacritic score. Duncan assured fans that the extra time would allow Playground to deliver a stunningly realized version of Albion, complete with the studio's signature visuals, engaging gameplay, and the British humor that the Fable series is known for.

The new gameplay footage, although brief at 50 seconds, showcased various elements of the game, including combat with different weapons such as a one-handed sword, a two-handed hammer, and a two-handed sword, as well as a fireball magic attack. The footage also included scenes of the protagonist walking through a city, riding a horse through a fantasy-styled forest, and, in true Fable fashion, kicking a chicken. A cutscene revealed a trap set with sausages to lure a werewolf-like creature, which the main character then battles.

Fable's revival was first announced in 2020 as a "new beginning" for the series. Subsequent reveals at the 2023 Xbox Game Showcase and the 2024 Xbox Showcase event have kept fans engaged and eager for more information. This reboot marks the first mainline Fable game since Fable 3 in 2010 and stands as one of Xbox Game Studios' most significant upcoming titles.
