Evans Denies Further MCU Avengers Role
Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Avengers: Doomsday or any other future films, despite recent reports suggesting otherwise. Evans directly refuted a Deadline article claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling the report "not true." This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, who plays the new Captain America, stating his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke to Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU remains unchanged. Evans reiterated this to Esquire, stating he is "happily retired" and that such rumors resurface periodically since Avengers: Endgame.
While Evans did reprise his role as Johnny Storm from the Fox Fantastic Four films in Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a smaller, comedic role, distinct from his main MCU arc as Captain America.
The MCU's future is currently somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors (Kang) from the franchise due to assault and harassment charges. Majors' planned role as the MCU's next major antagonist has been replaced by Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., leading to speculation about other original Avengers returning. However, no further returns have been officially confirmed.
Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, but will have a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which will reportedly continue the multiverse storyline, potentially featuring Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter.
