Ubisoft has announced the closure of its free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, with servers scheduled to shut down on June 3, 2025. This decision follows a period of declining player engagement despite an initially promising launch.

The Sunset Process Begins

The shutdown process commences December 3, 2024. New player registration, downloads, and in-game purchases will be halted. Ubisoft is committed to issuing refunds for eligible purchases:

  • Full refunds for Ultimate Founders Pack purchasers.
  • Full refunds for VC and DLC purchases made since November 3, 2024. Refunds are expected by January 28, 2025; contact Ubisoft for assistance beyond this date. Note that only the Ultimate Founder’s Pack is eligible for a refund.

Reasons Behind the Closure

Marie-Sophie Waubert, Ubisoft's Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer, attributed the closure to XDefiant's inability to maintain a sustainable player base in the highly competitive free-to-play market. The game, despite a strong initial launch, failed to attract and retain enough players to justify continued investment.

Impact on the Development Team

The closure will result in significant restructuring within Ubisoft. Approximately half of the XDefiant development team will transition to other roles within the company. However, the San Francisco and Osaka studios will close, and the Sydney studio will downsize, leading to job losses. This follows previous layoffs in August 2024 across several American Ubisoft studios.

A Positive Reflection Despite Closure

Despite the disappointing outcome, XDefiant achieved a remarkable 5 million users shortly after its May 21, 2024 release, breaking an internal Ubisoft record. A total of 15 million players engaged with the game. Executive Producer Mark Rubin highlighted the positive community interactions fostered by the game, emphasizing the respectful and open communication between players and developers.

Season 3 Release and Prior Reports

Season 3 will still launch as planned, though details remain scarce. Previous speculation suggested Assassin's Creed-themed content. Interestingly, Insider Gaming reported on XDefiant's struggles in August 2024, a claim initially denied by Rubin but ultimately proven accurate. The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 between XDefiant's Season 2 and 3 may have further impacted player retention.

A Final Thank You

Despite the shutdown, Rubin expressed gratitude to the dedicated XDefiant community for their support and passion. The game's closure serves as a reminder of the challenges inherent in the free-to-play market, where sustained player engagement is crucial for long-term success.
