Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is making waves with its unique blend of turn-based combat and real-time elements. Inspired by the Belle Epoque era of France and classic JRPGs, the game draws heavily from the Final Fantasy and Persona series, while forging its own identity.

The game's creative director, Guillaume Broche, recently discussed the game's inspirations, highlighting a desire to create a high-fidelity turn-based RPG. He cited Atlus' Persona and Square Enix's Octopath Traveller as stylistic influences, but emphasized a personal connection to the Final Fantasy series, particularly FF VIII, IX, and X. While acknowledging these influences, Broche stressed that Expedition 33 isn't a direct imitation, but rather a reflection of his own gaming history and creative vision.

Expedition 33's combat system seamlessly integrates real-time reactions into its turn-based structure. Players input commands, but must also react quickly to enemy attacks. This innovative approach draws comparisons to titles like Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars.

The game's narrative centers around preventing the Paintress from unleashing death once more. Exploration takes place in unique environments, such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters. Players have full control over their party, switching between characters on the fly and utilizing traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche even encourages players to experiment with unconventional character builds and combinations.

The development team aims to create a game that resonates with players in the same way classic RPGs impacted their lives. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
