Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making waves with its upcoming VR release, exclusively launching on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming, a significant step for the iconic strategy series.

A Immersive Strategy Experience

2K Games and Firaxis Games unveiled the VR version at the Civ World Summit on February 8, 2025, generating considerable excitement. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for bringing a new era of strategic gameplay to fans. Meta's Chris Pruett, Director of Games, highlighted the significance of Civ VII VR within Meta's growing VR/MR gaming portfolio, emphasizing its appeal to dedicated strategy enthusiasts.

While Civ VII will also be available on PlayStation consoles, the VR edition will be exclusive to Meta's platforms, at least for now.

Command Table and Multiplayer Mayhem

Civ VII VR immerses players in a detailed "Command Table" environment, allowing for strategic maneuvering and detailed observation of units and buildings. The experience seamlessly transitions between immersive VR and mixed reality (MR) modes, adapting to the player's physical space. The MR mode allows the Command Table to integrate into your real-world environment.

The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes for up to four players using Meta Quest 3/3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or challenge each other directly. The online multiplayer functionality requires both a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback

Firaxis Games actively addressed player feedback from the early access period (February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). Acknowledging concerns regarding the user interface (UI), they've prioritized UI improvements to enhance intuitiveness and map readability. Further updates are planned, including community-requested features like team-based multiplayer and expanded map variety. A quality-of-life update in March will focus on UI refinements, AI balancing, diplomacy adjustments, and bug fixes.

Civilization VII VR is slated for release this Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with a precise date yet to be announced.
