This LEGO rendition pays homage to one of the world's most iconic artworks. Van Gogh's sunflowers, painted during a prolific period in Arles, France, held deep personal significance, symbolizing gratitude. He famously wrote to a friend: "*If \[Georges\] Jeannin has the peony, \[Ernest\] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower.*"

Van Gogh created seven sunflower paintings; the most famous are three versions of his fourth painting (F454, F457, and F458). This LEGO set, a collaboration between the Van Gogh Museum (established in 1973) and LEGO, recreates the vibrant F458 version displayed in Amsterdam. The 3D relief uses abstract pieces to capture Van Gogh's distinctive brushstrokes.

The 2,615-piece set includes 34 numbered bags and an instruction booklet with a QR code linking to a podcast about Van Gogh. The build is cleverly structured: first, the frame, then the canvas, which is finally mounted into the frame using pins—a satisfyingly authentic touch. A delightful Easter egg replicates a detail discovered by art experts: a wooden strip added to the top of the original canvas. LEGO cleverly mirrors this using brown bricks, a hidden detail appreciated only by the builder.

While building the sunflowers is somewhat repetitive, this mirrors the dedication of the artist himself. The wilting flowers and varied perspectives add depth and realism. The final result is stunning, prompting the inevitable question: "Where do I put it?" The answer is simple: on the wall, where it becomes a lasting piece of art.

A week after completing it, I still find myself appreciating the three-dimensional details. This is a truly exceptional LEGO set, highly recommended. LEGO Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers (Set #31215), retailing at $199.99, is available exclusively at the LEGO Store.
