Gearbox Software recently concluded its Borderlands 4 State of Play event, showcasing 20 minutes of fresh gameplay footage and details about the eagerly awaited looter-shooter sequel.

The presentation immediately dives into action, positioning the 2025 Borderlands installment as Gearbox's most polished and immersive entry yet. Significant gameplay innovations were highlighted, ranging from enhanced movement capabilities to revamped loot systems. Packed with revelations about new mechanics and refined features, here are the key highlights from the comprehensive showcase.

Movement Abilities

Each Borderlands game introduces improved traversal mechanics, and Borderlands 4 continues this tradition. While previous teasers hinted at new mobility options, today's footage provided clearer demonstrations of what players can expect.

Vault Hunters gain Destiny-inspired midair hovering capabilities, enabling precise shooting while airborne and access to distant platforms. Additional tools include a multi-purpose grappling hook and tactical dodges. Vehicle gameplay remains central, with new features like on-demand spawns including the debut of the Digirunner model.

Guns and Manufacturers

While movement upgrades have been previewed before, this State of Play emphasized the expanded arsenal options. Eight weapon manufacturers will supply players' arsenals, introducing three new names - Order, Ripper, and Daedalus - alongside returning favorites.

The Licensed Parts System revolutionizes gun customization, allowing components from different manufacturers to be combined into hybrid weapons. Higher rarity guns feature more components, deepening the loot chase.

Multiplayer

Co-op improvements include streamlined matchmaking, cross-platform play, and individualized difficulty settings. Split-screen returns alongside quality-of-life upgrades like teammate fast travel.
