The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Author : George Feb 11,2025

This concludes my retrospective series on retro game eShop offerings. My supply of retro consoles with diverse game libraries is dwindling, but I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, amassing a legendary game collection that continues to see re-releases. While these titles once challenged Nintendo's dominance, now everyone can enjoy them across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa deserves more recognition than it received, achieving notable success as a 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a perilous threat. Expect vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. The PlayStation 2 sequel isn't as strong, but the collection is a must-have.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A landmark title, Final Fantasy VII introduced the JRPG genre to a wider Western audience, becoming Square Enix's biggest triumph and a key driver of the PlayStation's success. While the remake exists, this original version offers the classic FFVII experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, catapulting it to mainstream success. While later entries embraced increasingly bizarre elements, the original remains a standout, delivering an engaging, action-packed experience reminiscent of G.I. Joe. The fun factor is undeniable, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

Taito's classic shooter transitioned remarkably well to 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, their charm is undeniable. Vibrant colors, the satisfying enemy-capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs create a compelling shooter experience.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

Chrono Cross faced an insurmountable challenge: following up one of the most beloved JRPGs ever. While it falls short of Chrono Trigger's legacy, it stands on its own merits as a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. Its soundtrack is also legendary.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I appreciate most Mega Man games, objectivity suggests only a few stand out for newcomers. In the Mega Man X series, X4 excels with its refined design and balanced gameplay. The Legacy Collection offers a chance to experience this standout entry and judge for yourself.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with polished action. Created by the mind behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, it initially appears lighthearted but presents a significant challenge. Its rediscovery is a welcome event.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Though initially a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia stands out with its cheerful adventure and satisfying combat system. The collection's second game is also worthwhile.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation adventures varied in quality, but the original remains a highlight, focusing on tomb raiding over pure action. This remastered collection includes the first three games, allowing players to form their own opinions.

moon ($18.99)

This Japanese-only release deconstructs the traditional RPG, acting as more of an adventure game with a unique, almost "punk" aesthetic. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and underlying message make it a compelling experience.

This concludes the list. What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games available on Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments below. Thank you for following this series!
