The Last of Us Part 2 PC Port Will Require PSN Account
The Last of Us Part II Remastered's PC release on April 3rd, 2025, necessitates a PlayStation Network (PSN) account, sparking controversy among potential players. This requirement, also present in previous PC ports of PlayStation exclusives, forces users to create or link a PSN account to play, a decision met with past backlash.
While Sony's bringing beloved titles like The Last of Us Part II to PC via Steam is a welcome move, the PSN requirement is a significant hurdle. The original Last of Us Part I's PC port, released in 2022, also had this requirement. This decision is particularly frustrating given that The Last of Us Part II is a single-player game, unlike titles like Ghost of Tsushima, where a PSN account is justified for multiplayer functionality.
The Steam page clearly states the PSN account necessity, allowing players to link existing accounts. However, this detail is easily overlooked and has already generated significant negative feedback. Past incidents, such as the reversal of the PSN requirement for Helldivers 2 due to player outcry, highlight the potential for this decision to negatively impact sales and player satisfaction.
Sony's strategy appears aimed at expanding PSN user base, a logical business move. However, the inconvenience of creating or linking a second profile, coupled with PSN's unavailability in some regions, directly contradicts the series' focus on accessibility. The free nature of a basic PSN account doesn't fully mitigate the friction this requirement introduces for players eager to start their gaming experience. This decision, therefore, remains a contentious point for many.
