Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Theory Is Looking Pretty Good Right About Now
The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning lends significant credence to the circulating rumors about Joy-Con mouse functionality.
A striking moment in the reveal trailer shows detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface. They connect to connectors with seemingly flat bottoms, then smoothly glide across the surface—resembling mouse movement on a mousepad. Close inspection even reveals what appears to be a slider pad on one connector, bolstering this theory.Pre-reveal speculation pointed to an internal Joy-Con sensor, akin to those found in computer mice, enabling this functionality. However, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm this feature or its implications. Fans envision applications in traditionally mouse-and-keyboard-friendly games like Civilization, but also anticipate innovative uses within Nintendo's first-party titles. The possibilities remain excitingly open.
While much about potential Switch 2 mouse support (and the purpose of that mysterious new Joy-Con button) remains unknown, we do have some confirmed details. We know it's officially called the Nintendo Switch 2, slated for a 2025 release, and a new Mario Kart is in development. Backward compatibility with the original Switch is assured, and further software announcements are promised in an April Direct. Stay updated on all our Nintendo Switch 2 coverage here.
