Avowed's Companions: A Ranked Guide from Worst to Best

Beyond their narrative roles and engaging dialogue, Avowed's Companions offer significant practical advantages, from pathfinding to combat prowess. This guide ranks every Avowed Companion, from least to most helpful.

  1. Marius

Marius in Avowed

Early-game exploration benefits from Marius' passive abilities, but he's quickly outmatched as other companions join your party. His combat effectiveness is limited. Here's a breakdown of his skills and upgrades:

  • Blinding Roots: Roots enemies (upgrades include stunning, area-of-effect trapping, and bleed accumulation).
  • Heart Seeker: Piercing shot that ignores obstacles (upgrades include hitting multiple enemies, increased damage to low-health enemies, and cooldown reduction).
  • Shadow Step: Vanishes and attacks (upgrades include instant kills on stunned enemies, increased damage to low-health enemies, and increased targets).
  • Wounding Shots: Inflicts bleed (upgrades include damage reduction, slowing, and further damage reduction).

Marius excels at crowd control and weakening enemies, particularly useful against melee foes and those with low health. However, his niche abilities limit his overall value throughout most of the Avowed journey.

  1. Giatta

Giatta in Avowed

Giatta, a support-focused Animancer, prioritizes healing, shielding, and buffing. While not a damage dealer, her utility is invaluable in challenging situations, such as boss fights. Her abilities include:

  • Purification: Heals allies (upgrades include increased healing, enemy interruption, and increased ally damage reduction).
  • Barrier: Provides temporary health (upgrades include increased temporary health, healing on barrier expiration, and protection from melee attacks).
  • Acceleration: Boosts movement and attack speed (upgrades include damage reduction, extended duration, and cooldown reduction).
  • Reconstruction: Heals allies with attacks (upgrades include increased healing for low-health allies, temporary health for full-health allies, and ally revival on enemy kill).

Giatta also activates Essence Generators, unlocking late-game areas. She synergizes well with magic-focused Envoy builds.

  1. Kai

Kai in Avowed

Encountered early, Kai remains consistently helpful. This tank deals significant damage with minimal player intervention. His abilities are:

  • Fire and Ire: Blunderbuss attack with high stun and taunt (upgrades include ignition, increased stun, and cooldown reduction).
  • Unbending Defense: Health regeneration and damage reduction (upgrades include increased damage reduction, increased regeneration, and a damaging shockwave).
  • Leap of Daring: Area-of-effect stun and taunt (upgrades include increased area of effect, temporary health per hit, and bonus attack damage per hit).
  • Second Wind: Self-revival (upgrades include increased health restoration, attack speed boost, and ability cooldown reset).

Kai's abilities are effective against various enemy types, offering both single-target and crowd control options. His self-revival makes him exceptionally reliable. He can also use fire to remove obstacles.

  1. Yatzli

Yatzli in Avowed

Yatzli, a powerful Wizard, boasts high-damage attacks and excellent crowd control. She's essentially air support in the Living Lands. Her skills include:

  • Essence Explosion: Area-of-effect arcane damage (upgrades include increased blast radius, fire accumulation, and cooldown reduction).
  • Minoletta’s Missile Battery: Volley of homing missiles (upgrades include increased fire rate, range, and shock accumulation).
  • Arduos Delay of Motion: Slows enemies (upgrades include increased slow, area-of-effect, and frost accumulation).
  • Blast: Area-of-effect burst damage on hit (upgrades include explosive damage for breaking obstacles, increased stun, and status effect chances).

Yatzli's powerful abilities and obstacle-clearing capabilities make her the top companion choice, despite being recruited last.

Avowed launches on PC and Xbox on February 18.
